Students of the Bachelor in Hospitality and Tourism Management (Honours) programme at the Management & Science Institute (MSI) have completed a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project titled Restoration and Enhancement of the Mangrove Ecosystem in Anawilundawa Wetland. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this initiative took place on 13th October 2024 to promote the conservation, rehabilitation, and sustainable use of mangrove ecosystems.

Key objectives of the project

Biodiversity enhancement: A core objective of this project was to enhance biodiversity by creating and improving habitats for fish, birds, and other wildlife. Mangrove restoration is essential for the survival of numerous species and for maintaining ecological balance.

Improving water quality and carbon sequestration: Mangroves are critical in filtering pollutants and trapping sediments from rivers, thus improving water quality. They also act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and mitigating the effects of climate change.

The Anawilundawa Wetland, a designated Ramsar site, is home to one of the most diverse mangrove ecosystems in Sri Lanka. However, environmental degradation, human activities, and climate change pose significant threats to the area. MSI students’ efforts directly addressed these issues through hands-on restoration activities and promoting sustainable practices.

Project highlights:

Mangrove planting: Restoration of degraded areas and expanded mangrove coverage through active planting efforts.

Awareness sessions: Workshops and sessions aimed at educating local communities and stakeholders, fostering a shared commitment to protecting mangrove ecosystems.

Educational programmes: Initiatives highlighting the global importance of mangroves, including their role in supporting livelihoods, protecting shorelines, and mitigating climate change.

This event focused on ecological restoration and aimed to raise awareness about the importance of mangrove conservation for both local and global populations. Participants, including students, gained practical knowledge of the critical role mangroves play in maintaining environmental balance and contributing to the region’s long-term sustainability.

Aligned with SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), this initiative supports the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources and biodiversity. As a vital component of Sri Lanka’s natural heritage, the restoration and sustainable management of the Anawilundawa Wetland are essential for both biodiversity and the resilience of local communities whose livelihoods depend on these ecosystems.
