Our world is full of amazing sites like the Great Barrier Reef, the Colosseum and the Pyramids of Giza. One of the most wondrous is the rainforests. Rainforests are situated in countries near the equator such as Sri Lanka and Madagascar, where the weather is tropical. The largest rainforest in the world is the Amazon rainforest, which is approximately 1.35 billion acres and covers more than half of South America.
It is home to 55.7 percent of the flora and fauna in the world.
Sadly, the rainforests are under threat by both man and natural destruction. Humans destroy the rainforests by illegally felling trees, clearing the land for construction, building roads for transportation, overgrazing cattle and slash-and-burn cultivation. As the rainforest decreases, animals and plants will eventually lose their homes.
We must make an effort to protect our rainforests. Without them, our lands will turn into deserts and the eco-system will be disrupted. People must a protect our rainforests if we want to preserve them for future generations.
