Grade six students of Ananda Balika, Colombo and Vidura College participated in the Walter Jayaratne Challenge Trophy debate at Dharmapala Auditorium of Ananda Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo on September 30, 2024.The event drew an audience, eager to witness some of the best young debaters in action. The principals, deputy principals, teachers, parents and Grade six students of both schools attended the event.
The debate centered on the topic ‘Tuition should be banned or not”, challenging both teams to present their arguments. The debaters of Ananda Balika, opened the debate on “Tuition should be banned”. Their strong opening set the tone for an exchange of ideas.
Vidura College, with a dynamic team spoke on the importance of tuition on enhancing education.
Both teams showcased their talents. The Judges praised the students for their preparation and performance.
Ananda Balika emphasised the negative impact of tuition on education, while Vidura College spoke on how tuition helps students to achieve great heights in education.
Vidura College was declared the winner of the Walter Jayaratne Challenge Trophy, earning not only the trophy but also accolades.
The victory marked a significant achievement for Vidura College junior debaters. The organisers praised both teams for their sportsmanship during the competition.
The Walter Jayaratne Challenge Trophy debate not only highlighted the talents of the participants, but also fostered close ties between Ananda Balika and Vidura College. The students of both teams will continue sharpening their skills.
