Russian Ballet is renowned for its artistry, technical precision, and dramatic storytelling. Originating in the Imperial courts, it flourished in the 19th and 20th centuries, showcasing masterpieces like “Swan Lake” and “The Nutcracker” at iconic companies such as the Bolshoi and Mariinsky where they have continued to influence global dance with their rich heritage.
This lovely dance form has gained a notable presence in Sri Lanka, captivating audiences with its grace and meticulousness. Cultural institutions such as the Russian Cultural Centre in Colombo promotes this lovely dance form, often featuring performances and workshops by visiting Russian ballet artists, especially under the guidance of Maria Popova, First Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka and Director of the Russian House in Colombo since 2022. The influence of iconic Russian companies such as the Bolshoi inspires local dancers and enthusiasts, fostering a vibrant dance community here in this pearl of the Indian Ocean.
The Russian Classical Ballet Examinations organised by the Russian Cultural Centre in Colombo is known by many. The examinations commenced with just four little Ballerinas under the guidance of Galina Pleshakova as the Founding Ballet instructor of the School, Buddhapriya Ramanayaka, Chief Executive Officer and Chandi Aluvihare, Cultural Officer as the Ballet School coordinator in 2001.
The Examinations, scheduled from today till October 26, are held for over 1,000 students from all around Sri Lanka by this year under the guidance of 10 more experienced Ballet teachers, Samantha Samararathne, Niluka Madurawala, Radeesha Bodiyabadu and Shenaalie Dias as the senior instructors along with Kavishka Prematilake, Vihini Samarasekara, Indeevara Miltaso, Nikini Fonseka and Ovini Dissanayake as the junior teachers and Ashini Madumali as an Assistant Teacher.
The examinations which used to be held in classrooms are now held within the walls of the Auditorium of the Russian Cultural Centre with a touch of Russian architectural ambience.
