Sports followers in the country have been left flabbergasted with the continuation of the so-called keepers of fair-play despite the biggest change at the top in government having taken place 30 days ago.
Most sports followers are completely baffled with the continuation of the administration at Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) that the ousted Head of State Ranil Wickremasinghe gave the green light to continue while sacking his Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe in preference that brought all efforts for a clean-up to zero.
The biggest concern is that despite the change in Guard, cricket officials could carry on with impunity like the perfect lilywhites even after their guardian was sacked in a people’s verdict on September 21.
What most people want to know is what on earth has happened to as many as four high profile Investigative Reports or Recommendations compiled by retired Supreme Court Judges and other erudite men calling for a complete overall at SLC.
With two of the campaigners for Change in Roshan Ranasinghe and former World Cup champion captain Arjuna Ranatunga ending up on the losing side politically, there appears to be no drastic voice to push ahead the call for an overhaul at SLC while the current tour by the West Indies team is serving as some kind of a distraction from ground reality.
In a nutshell sports administrations in the county have gone completely out of hand.
Even though the season connected to schools rugby ended nearly two months ago, the sport continues to make the news for the wrong reasons with more reports of player brutality at the hands of their coaches and other so-called guardians obsessed with the win-at-any-cost syndrome while Sri Lanka Rugby the parent body lies in the doldrums strangled by wolves and brought under a government authority.
In football, an implosion seems to be on the cards with internal squabbles and power struggles being enacted while the almighty National Olympic Committee (NOC) with one medal in 75 years has been accused of financial mismanagement and human smuggling that took it to Parliament last year.
The biggest obstacle that stands in the way of Change is that unlike politicians, sports officials enjoy a kind immunity as they are able to feather their nests that do not put them into continous public scrutiny and are not subjected to vibrant media scrutiny for reasons best known to them.
