The Alumni Organisation of the University of Colombo (AOUC) will hold its 32nd Annual General Meeting and get-together at the University’s Student Centre on Saturday, October 26 at 8 a.m.
This premier gathering showcases the organisation’s role as the largest and most active body representing the alumni of the University of Colombo, a community that has flourished since its launch on April 4, 1992.
Originally started as a collective for alumni post-1960 as part of the Alumni Association, the AOUC established itself as an independent entity in 1996. Since then, it has broadened its reach and diversified its activities, transitioning from a nostalgic meeting place for old friends to a robust supporter of the university’s administration and its noble objectives. The AOUC is dedicated to fulfilling the needs of its members while actively supporting current university students through various initiatives, including scholarship programs.
The AOUC’s commitment to community service extends beyond the university’s walls, engaging with local school children and encouraging their participation in literary competitions. This outreach is part of the organisation’s vision to uplift cultural standards among university students and strengthen their connection to the arts. Various cultural programs have been organised, providing students with the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the artistic creations of distinguished alumni artists as well as other talented personalities.
In recent years, the AOUC has initiated unique projects such as publishing an academic book and presenting an award-winning international film, both of which reflect the depth of talent among its members. Notable individuals like Upali Upawansa, an author on condominium properties, and Malaka Devapriya, director of and award-winning film, serve as examples of the organisation’s remarkable membership. The AOUC has a history of honouring distinguished university teachers and alumni, setting a benchmark for recognising excellence within the university community. The current office bearers, led by President Bernard Kariyawasam, have demonstrated resilience in overcoming challenges, fostering an atmosphere of collaboration and support among members.
As part of the upcoming Annual General Meeting, the AOUC will also host the award ceremony for the ‘Palasa’ literary competition, which is in its second consecutive year. This initiative not only showcases the literary talent of undergraduates and alumni but also underscores the organisation’s commitment to nurturing creativity among the younger generation.
For 2024, the ‘Palasa’ literary competition features expanded categories, including poetry, short story writing, musical lyrics writing, and short drama scripts. The competition encourages participation from students across all state and private universities, with an additional inclusion for Tamil medium submissions. A panel of 11 judges, consisting of literary critics and accomplished educators, has been arranged to evaluate the submissions.
The prize-giving ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. on October 26, just before the Annual General Meeting. The event will be attended by esteemed guests, including the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo, Prof. H.D. Karunarathna, as well as many alumni eager to celebrate this vibrant community.
The AOUC continues to thrive as a hub of creativity and support, reinforcing the bond among alumni and the university while uplifting the next generation of scholars and artists. The upcoming events are a testament to the organisation’s dedication to fostering an enduring legacy of excellence and collaboration within the University of Colombo community.
