Elpitiya PS election peaceful – EC

63 percent voter turnout

The Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election was conducted peacefully yesterday. Voting proceeded smoothly. There were no reports of election-related violence, said Election Commissioner General R.M.A.L Rathnayake.

The final voter turnout was recorded at 63 percent. Rathnayake said the election results were due to be released late last night.

Voting took place in 48 polling centres from 7am to 4 pm.

Two hundred and seventy nine candidates from eight political parties and one Independent Group contested the election for 28 seats of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha. The number of eligible voters was over 55 000.

The election, based on the 2018 voter registration list has 55,643 eligible voters. Around 6oo Government officials and 500 police personnel were deployed to provide security.
