Sri Lankans shine at Asian tennis

Damsath Pieris and Ananya Norbert emerged under-14 boys and girls champions respectively at the end of the first week at the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) under-14 tennis tournament at the SLTA courts Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha in Colombo yesterday.

In the boys’ final Pieris beat Yudeeraya Atapattu in a hard fought two sets with the first set being closely fought out.

The second set too was closely fought out between the two players.

However, Pieris had an easy win the semi-final when he beat Revan Amarasinghe in straight sets 6-0, 6-3.

Ananya Norbert had a one-sided win over Elisa Kahagalle in the girls’ final.

The first set was closely fought out before Ananya emerged winner 7-5 but the second set was easily won on 6-1.

Ananya also had an easy win over Sahansa Damsiluni 6-1, 6-0 in the semi-final.

The first week was played from October 29 and the second week in the ATF Under-16 tournament for boys and girls will begin tomorrow (4). (TBR)
