An under-16 team from the Renown Football Academy in Sri Lanka did well to finish as runners-up in a prestigious Lankawi Cup seven-a-side football tournament held in Langkawi, Malaysia recently.
They won all four matches in their group B beating clubs and academy teams from Malaysia scoring 16 goals in all and conceding just one.
They finished unbeaten in the group stage. They beat Kenari Kids Lankawi 6-0, beat Kedawang FC 2-0, beat FCKL Falcons 6-0 and beat Raisuri Study Germany (Malaysia) 2-1.
Renown also beat Bayas Juniors 2-0 to reach the final where they met FCSA team from Malaysia. After exchanges were even, this game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The final result had to be decided on penalty shootout and unfortunately for Renown they lost 2-3 to finish as runners-up.
Renown Football Academy had some outstanding achievements from their under-15 and 16 teams in international tournaments this year.
They finished third in the Plate category in the Man City Abu Dhabi Cup organized by Premier League Champions Manchester City. They beat teams from England, UAE and Saudi Arabia.
In the Penang Cup held in Malaysia they finished third in the Cup category.
Renown were the top scorers in their age group with 19 goals and conceded just two goals, the least number. The goalkeeper of Renown, Shaathin Shaheed was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
