SDB bank supported the launch of an innovative range of eco-friendly products developed by Wasthra Ceylon, an emerging local innovator in sustainable production by strengthening the supply chain via the “Rural Upliftment Program”, one of the core sustainability initiatives of the Bank.

Wasthra Ceylon’s offerings include ‘Nari’ sanitary napkins — the highlight of the collection — as well as banana flour, eco-conscious packaging, clothing, and even banana-based food products.

Crafted from the banana plant, this product line emphasises environmental sustainability and economic opportunity. It was unveiled at a launch event in Badagiriya, Hambantota.

Wasthra Ceylon with the visionary thinking of its Founder / CEO Thanuj Chandrasekara is committed to transforming banana fibre from typically discarded trunks and leaves into valuable products that uplift rural communities. This approach not only reduces waste but also creates a secondary income stream for banana farmers in Sri Lanka’s rural regions.

SDB bank’s collaboration with Wasthra Ceylon aligns with its sustainability mission to promote economic resilience and rural community upliftment.

Working in partnership with the Department of Agrarian Development, the bank supports banana farmers by creating value-added supply chains that drive growth for both the rural economy and sustainable industries. Beyond financial assistance, SDB bank also facilitates access to manpower, materials, and technology, empowering local communities to benefit from these innovative products.

DGM/Chief Financial Officer of SDB bank, Shanka Abeywardene said, The launch of ‘Nari’ and the broader range of eco-friendly products signals a new era in sustainable innovation for Sri Lanka.

“As a bank deeply rooted in the rural economy, SDB bank strengthens the foundations of local businesses like Wasthra Ceylon and is committed to supporting visionary entrepreneurs by solidifying the value chain via connections with funding, supply chains, and expert mentorship that makes SDB bank unique from the rest,” he said.

Through the launch of this entire eco-friendly product line, SDB bank and Wasthra Ceylon reaffirm their shared commitment to a greener, more inclusive future for Sri Lanka. This partnership highlights SDB bank’s dedication to sustainable development, rural empowerment, and national economic growth.
