The Constitutional Council (CC) has approved the recommendation to appoint Murdhu Fernando as the Chief Justice.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Constitutional Council on Friday night led by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana. The recommendation to appoint Murdhu Fernando was forwarded to the Constitutional Council by the President. Justice Fernando took oaths as the Acting Chief Justice before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on October 10, 2024.
Justice Fernando is the second woman to hold the position of Chief Justice in Sri Lanka’s history, after Shirani Bandaranayake in 2011.
