The Soul has recently released their latest album ‘Western Sunrise’, about a dystopian future that’s controlled by artificial intelligence. Rising from the ashes of a lost world, the album opens with a punchy, forceful, upbeat track, ‘Light Bringer’, which is introduced as the ‘mighty hope bringer’ to offer light, hope and optimism in the shadows. The playful ballad’s slow melodies and gentle guitar strumming transcend into a darker, heavier rock chord progression bound to create some epic headbanging moments at live shows. Throughout the album, humans are described as also being connected to the artificial intelligence by chips and mechanical limbs. In this smoky desolate land, the grungy track ‘Wasted Me’ captures the depressing, ethereal feeling of floating in space. Dave Roberts’ deadpan vocals echo restlessly, swimming over delicate melodies, searching for a sense of belonging and solace. The concept album follows a small number of organic, free humans, leading the revolt and they are losing the battle against this AI metal driven, connected, higher consciousness. Reasserting their existence in this harsh world, ‘RIP My Friend’ repeats the mantra ‘I am here’, establishing their place in society and that they are here to stay. They have been told that there will be a person who will come and kind of help them fight. They don’t really know who it is, but then they discover a child who has an ability to emanate the electromagnetic pulse – the ‘Light Bringer’. He’s really fast and he learns how to control and emanate an electromagnetic pulse, which allows this organic group of humans to get the upper hand slowly. Running through the sand, evoking the battle sequence, ‘Maya’ is a fast paced, electrifying powerful track where “the purpose of this war will be fulfilled.” The final track ‘Gear up’ features clear and rallying vocals, encouraging people to band together and rise up as a revolutionary force.
