India openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul ensured they maintained their dominant position against Australia with an unbroken century stand on day two of the first Test in Perth as the tourists reached 172 for no loss, a lead of 218 runs on the first innings.
The match was turned on its head on the first day on a fast Perth pitch as India hit back to leave Australia at 67 for 7 after being bowled out for 150 with 17 wickets falling on the first day which never happened in Australia since 1952.
The home team was eventually bowled out for 104 in the first essay as Indian paceman Jasprit Bumrah claimed five wickets.
Jaiswal, who is playing in Australia for the first time, was unbeaten on 90 and Rahul, who is opening because regular captain Rohit Sharma is in India after the birth of his second child, was on 62.
Both were patient and willing to defend, before punishing any width or errors in length, on a pitch that carried nowhere near as much threat as the opening day when 17 wickets fell.
Only four previous Tests have been played at the Optus Stadium in Perth and all have been won by Australia, who have batted first on each occasion.
Australia will need a strong third day if they are to extend that record.
India: 150 (Jos Hazlewood 4-29) & 172-0 (Jaiswal 90 not out, KL Rahul 62 not out)
Australia: 104 (Jaspprit Bumrah 5-30)
