Alert engine driver averts disaster A possible disaster was averted when the alert engine driver and his co-driver of the Badulla-bound Podi Menike train noticed a large rock that had fallen onto the railway track between Hali Ela and Badulla on Friday. Without waiting for the arrival of a work crew which would have further delayed the train, the duo promptly removed the rock with great effort and cleared the track.

Earth mounds and rocks which had fallen on railway tracks in the Uduwara area of Hali-Ela due to heavy rain are being cleared. The railway authorities said that the train services between Badulla and Ella will be suspended for several days.

One lane of the Passara-Lunugala road, which was blocked due to a landslide close to the 16th milepost of Passara, was reopened for traffic between 6.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. yesterday (November 30). The sluice gates of Deduru Oya, Per Aru, Ulhitiya-Rathkinda, Polgolla, Nachchaduwa, Rajanganaya, Kala Wewa, and Weheragala reservoirs are being kept open following continued heavy rainfall.

The Colombo-Batticaloa main road, which had been closed for several days due to the overflowing Mahaweli River, was reopened for light vehicles on Friday afternoon (November 29). Around 20 houses in Anamaduwa and Puttalam are under water due to the heavy rains.
