The audience was drawn to him and were all ears as a drop- dead gorgeous young man said, “I think it is our generation’s duty to stand for ourselves, our communities; it’s through the people to the people”, said Megha Sooriyaarachchi whose self- assured intellectual excellence and laid-back demeanour brought him to international stardom in Vietnam overnight. Vietnam was the venue for this year’s ‘Mr. World 2024’ competition where more than 60 contestants participated from around the world.

Megha, with his magnetic personality mesmerised the audience in Vietnam who were impatient to hear who the winners were in the different categories at this event that added glamour and prestige to the contest. Megha was an exception during the run-up to the awards ceremony; His personality aided by his self- assurance spoke volumes for himself. In addition he spoke with absolute clarity and conviction at the competition.

He carried himself with ease and his body language was transparent as he exhibited poise. All eyes were on Megha as his charm was beyond comparison. His stage presence sent optimistic waves as his brown eyes glittered. For an ardent literary enthusiast as for us he looked like The Bard’s Hamlet and Othello. He reminded the audience of Romeo, a famous lover in English literature. He was more than just a legend in his selected field.His unassuming and irresistible charm stole the attention of the audience.

It was in such a backdrop that he was selected winner of the People’s Choice Award; he bagged the highest number of votes in this year’s Mr. World Competition.

Proudly introducing the land of his birth as the most desirable island in the world, Megha also grabbed the prestigious title of National Costume, People’s Choice Award; the title invariably showcases the island’s culture.

He was under heavy media scrutiny as he was the first Sri Lankan to make it to the top ten at a Mr.World Competition.

Megha’s parents are doctors and he is a product of D.S.Senanayake Vidyalaya, Colombo-7. Born in Kandy and raised in different parts of the island, Megha just adores Sri Lanka. “We got the benefit of free education and free health care. Therefore, we are indebted to this country. I believe that I have to do my best for my country. In my capacity, I often try to do the best possible thing for my country. I believe that all of us can collectively do something for the country”, Megha said in public. Apart from being the deserving recipient of the titles and awards, Megha is also well-known in acting and directing while lecturing takes centre-stage. He has a passion for art and education.

Acting and film directing are his forte but loves the latter. ‘Marine Drive’, the debut film he directed, is awaiting release. With his outstanding performance in ‘Mandara’, with his third film, Megha has turned out to be of the most sought-after actors in local cinema; Vishwa, the central character in ‘Mandara’ is played by him and his versatile acting could be seen. While in school Megha was a talented and popular sportsman. “Except rugby, I have played almost every sport in school. I have also represented my school at national level in hockey and football” Megha said. Since childhood, the martial arts have been an integral part of his life. Regular workouts are part and parcel in his day-to- day activities.

His hard work has paid off and his academic excellence is his fortune. Megha has a Master’s in Mass Communication from the University of Colombo while he read for his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Kelaniya.

The charming actor is simultaneously learned too. Academia is what he prefers most. His disposition reassures his fans that an enduring and educated young man can overcome any obstacle in life’s trajectory and be victorious one fine day. He is the metaphor for achievement and the simile for resilience and endurance. With his charm, he is will be able to reach the pinnacle in his selected field.
