United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka Marc-André Franche met Speaker Dr. Asoka Ranwala at the Parliament complex on Wednesday (December 4). Secretary General of Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera was also present.
Franche commended the Government’s policies aimed at reducing ethnic and religious tensions and fostering national unity.
He underscored the importance of public consultation in the legislative process, to keep the public trust in politicians. He elaborated on the role of the United Nations in Sri Lanka, reaffirming the UN’s readiness to support the country across various developmental and governance initiatives. Expressing his appreciation for the setting up of the Women Parliamentarians Caucus, Franche highlighted the need to promote gender equality and inclusive measures within the legislative framework.
Speaker Dr. Ranwala spoke on the setting up of Parliamentary Committees in the Tenth Parliament. He emphasized the importance of ensuring non-overlapping functions of the committees to enhance their effectiveness.
