Sri Lanka collapsed from an overnight 242 for 3 to be all out for 328 in the first innings of the second and final cricket Test against South Africa at Gqeberha, East London yesterday in reply to the home team’s score of 358.
The debacle ensured that South Africa end the day at 191 for 3, a lead of 221 runs as the in-form batsman Temba Bavuma (48) and Tristan Stubbs (36) featured in an unbroken stand of 82 runs for the fourth wicket.
The dismissal of Angelo Mathews who was caught in the slip cordon for 44 early in the day was what triggered the Sri Lankan collapse as first Test bowling hero Marco Jansen stepped into the action.
Sri Lanka then kept losing wickets at regular intervals and the next to be dismissed was the other overnight batter Kamindu Mendis who fell two runs short of a half century caught in the slips as Jansen struck a second time to put South Africa back in contention.
Sri Lanka skipper Dhananjaya de Silva did not last long and was dismissed for 14 followed by the last recognized batsman in Kusal Mendis who was bowled by Dane Paterson for 16.
It marked Paterson’s first five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
Building up on a vital lead of 30 runs on the first innings, South Africa took tea at 76 for 1 a lead of 106 runs.
Opener Tony de Zorzi was the batsman dismissed bowled by spinner Prabath Jayasuriya in the 14th over.
