ECU Sri Lanka launches ground-breaking bachelor programs in psychology and engineering

Distinguished dignitaries took center stage to mark the launch. Prof. Helen Klaebe, General Manager of ECU Sri Lanka, Prof.Paulo De Souza, Executive Dean of the School of Engineering, and David Matthews, Executive General Manager of Navitas, Ishani Kariyawasam, Program Convenor of Creative Humanities, Sachith Heenatigala, Program Convenor of Engineering.

Edith Cowan University (ECU) Sri Lanka marked a momentous occasion on December 5, 2024, with the official launch of two innovative undergraduate programs: the Bachelor of Psychology and the Bachelor of Technology (Engineering) major in Electrical. Held at the state-of-the-art ECU Sri Lanka campus, the vibrant event underscored the university’s dedication to delivering world-class education in Sri Lanka and fostering academic excellence on an international scale.

Professor Helen Klaebe, General Manager of ECU Sri Lanka, warmly welcomed an audience comprising academics, industry leaders, and media representatives, emphasising the university’s commitment to nurturing innovation and providing transformative educational opportunities.

The launch ceremony was nothing short of spectacular. It featured creative and symbolic representations of the new programs, captivating the audience. The Bachelor of Psychology was personified by models carrying intricate brain replicas, reflecting the program’s focus on mental health and understanding human behaviour. Meanwhile, the Bachelor of Technology (Engineering) major in Electrical was brought to life through striking “Electro Man” figures, embodying the ingenuity and energy of engineering innovation.

Key dignitaries, including Prof. Klaebe, Prof. Paulo De Souza, Executive Dean of the School of Engineering, and David Matthews, Executive General Manager of Navitas, officiated the launch. Their collective insights highlighted ECU’s vision of academic growth, innovation, and its mission to establish itself as a leading educational institution in the region.

During his address, Matthews outlined Navitas’ ambitious vision for ECU Sri Lanka, including plans for academic expansion and campus development. Ishani Kariyawasam, Program Convenor of Creative Humanities, provided an in-depth overview of the Bachelor of Psychology, underscoring its emphasis on addressing mental health challenges and fostering a profound understanding of human behaviour.

On the other hand, Sachith Heenatigala, Program Convenor of Engineering, introduced the Bachelor of Technology (Engineering) major in Electrical, showcasing its industry-focused curriculum tailored to equip students for a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Professor Klaebe highlighted the significance of psychology in tackling contemporary challenges, while Professor Paulo De Souza, drawing from his rich experience, including NASA projects, delivered a thought-provoking perspective on the future of engineering education.

The evening concluded on a high note, with a lively Q and A session, followed by networking, live music, and a celebratory dinner. Guests were treated to an unforgettable experience that celebrated innovation, education, and community.
