Prepositions Part 39

Combinations

A preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show in what relation the person or thing denoted by it stands in regard to something else. There are over 100 prepositions in the  English Language. This is a very small number compared with the vast number of nouns, adjectives and verbs. Here are some of the prepositions used in English

 

Exception to
Something or someone that is not included in a general statement or does not follow a rule or pattern.
The spelling of this word is an interesting exception to the rule.
Exchange for
To give someone something and receive the same kind of thing from them at the same time.
Where can I exchange my dollars for rupees?
Exclude from
To deliberately not include something.
Some of the data were specifically excluded from the report.
Exclusive to
Available or belonging only to particular people and not shared.
This offer is exclusive to readers of the magazine.
Excursion to
A short journey arranged so that a group of people can visit a place, especially while they are on holiday.
The tour is an excursion to the Grand Canyon.
Excuse for
To forgive someone for doing something that is not seriously wrong.
Please excuse me for being so late today.
Exempt from
Not affected by something, or not having to do it or pay it.
The interest you earn will be exempt from income tax.
Exercise into
Physical activities that you do in order to stay healthy and become stronger.
Try to fit some regular exercise into your daily routine.
Exit from
To leave a place.
Go to the north exit from the garden.
Exonerate from
To state officially that someone who has been blamed for something is not guilty.
Ben was exonerated from all blame.
Expand into
If a company expands, it opens new offices or factories.
We have plans to expand into the U.S. market.
Expel from
To officially force someone to leave a school or organisation.
Two undergraduates were expelled from university for taking drugs.
Experiment with
A process in which you test a new idea or method to see whether it is useful or effective.
The Professor is still experimenting with pigeons.
Expert in
Someone who has a special skill or knowledge of a subject, gained as a result of training or experience.
Max is an expert in statistics.
Explain to
To tell someone about something in a way that is clear or easy to understand.
The manager explained the office system to me.
Explanation for
The reasons you give for why something happened or why you did something.
Can you think of any explanation for his failure?
Exponent of
An exponent of an idea or belief tries to explain it and persuade others that it is good or useful.
Robert was an exponent of the social work approach.
Export from
To sell goods to another country.
The company exports fish to the United States.
Expose to
To show something that is usually covered or hidden.
Many rare gems were exposed to the public.
Expressive of
Showing very clearly what someone thinks or feels.
Blake’s poem is expressive of peace of mind.
