The BASL’s Youth Men and Women Boxing Championship for the General Jagath Jayasuriya Trophy will be held alongside the 94th Clifford Cup Championship at Sahas Uyana, Kandy from December 18-22 with the preliminary rounds to commence daily at 2:00 pm.
The event is open to male and female boxers aged 17 and 18 years, born between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007. Unlike other competitions, no prior qualifications are required to participate, ensuring a wide representation of young talent from across the nation.
Highlighting the significance of these events, president of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka, Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara, said: “The Boxing Association of Sri Lanka is proud to host two significant events this year that are crucial for the growth of the sport in our country.
“The Clifford Cup, one of our most prestigious national competitions, will have the finest boxers from across Sri Lanka competing at the highest level. Alongside this, we are organizing a special Youth Boxing Championship, which will spotlight the incredible talent of boxers aged 17 and 18.
“These events are integral to the Sri Lankan boxing calendar, providing a vital platform for athletes to display their skills and gain recognition. This year, we are thrilled to announce that both tournaments will take place simultaneously.
“We anticipate fierce competition and outstanding performances, making these tournaments a standout moment for boxing in Sri Lanka.”
The championship encompasses an array of weight categories, starting from minimum weight to Super heavyweight for men and women. The competition provides a structured and fair playing field for all participants to display their prowess in line with internationally recognised boxing standards.
The technical meeting and official draw will take place on December 17 from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Sahas Uyana, setting the stage for the event. The entry deadline for all competitors is December 12.
In recognition of excellence, all champions, first runners-up and second runners-up will be awarded medals and certificates, while the standout performers in both the men’s and women’s divisions will receive special awards for Best Boxer according to the organisers.
