The so-called National Olympic Committee (NOC) has admitted it has hit the dumps putting its activities, whatever there was, in total disarray.
The NOC said recent developments where its Ethics Committee called for the removal of Secretary Maxwell de Silva and the subsequent intervention of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), that warned of a ban, was proof of the chaotic situation in the apex body running Olympic sports in the island.
The NOC has also admitted that individual interests over the collective welfare of athletes have taken precedence over everything else and unable to bear the consequences have called for a new election of office-bearers in March 2025 to preempt an international ban over one man’s intransigence that has brought it to disrepute.
Last December, Member of Parliament Chaminda Mayadunne branded the NOC as the most corrupt in the country that was also involved in human smuggling.
“The athletes are at the heart of the Olympic Movement and their interests must take precedence over individual agendas. This election is essential to protect their future and restore the NOCSL’s credibility,” the NOC said in a Press statement quoting a representative of the Member Federations that attended a Special General Meeting on Friday.
A majority of executive board members of the NOC attended the meeting.
“This meeting comes in response to prolonged conflicts within the Executive Board, marked by divisions and mutual allegations that have significantly disrupted the NOCSL’s operations and its support for sporting activities.
“Despite multiple attempts to mediate and unify the Board, these efforts have regrettably not succeeded.
“Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the General Membership deliberated on warnings issued by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).
“The decision to call for early elections aims to address these concerns, appoint a new committee for the Olympic cycle, and chart a clear path forward.
“The Membership expressed their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of Sri Lankan athletes and upholding the integrity of the NOCSL,” the NOC further added in its Press statement.
