Havelock SC brought back old memories by playing fast open and robust rugby to trounce Navy SC by 43 points (6 tries, 5 conversions, 1 penalty) to 25 (3 tries, 2 conversions, 2 penalties) in their A division inter-club rugby encounter at Welisara yesterday.
They played to their strength with their individuals excelling and also with good support from behind. They were robust at times that had the somewhat strong Navy defence in tatters which could not cope with the individual excellence that often caught them on the wrong foot.
Navy opened scoring early through a penalty by Isuru Kongahawatte followed by a try by Dimuth Perera and with the conversion they took a 10-nil lead.
Thereafter, Havelocks came back strongly with a try by Jayathu Rajarathne through his individual brilliance.
Samuel Maduwantha converted and Havelocks reduced the lead.
From that point onward Havelocks took control of the game through some individual brilliance.
They made several inroads into the Navy territory and through their heavy players piled on the points. They scored through Janindu Fernando and Kavindu Keshan who used their penetrative knowledge to pile on the points.
Navy also scored a try by Denuwan Wickremarachchi to add to their tally but was just short of the Havelocks score.
Havelocks led by 24 points to 18 at half time.
It was all Havelocks during the second half as they piled on the points from the second minute of the second half.
Senal Silva scored a try followed by tries from Samuel Maduwantha and Jayathu Rajarathne who scored his second try in the match.
Samuel Maduwantha made a conversion to give them the 43 points in all.
Navy finished off the game with a try by Denuwan Wickramarachchi in the fading minutes of the game.
Thilina Weerasinghe made the conversion to give them the 25 points in the end.
