A five-member Election Committee (EC) was appointed at a Special General Meeting (SGM) of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) yesterday to oversee the Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for January 21.

The Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) nominated retired High Court Judges G.S. Edirisinghe (Chairman) and Piyasena Ranasinghe, along with Bandula Dahanayake, with their appointments receiving unanimous approval at the SGM.

National Olympic Committee President Suresh Subramaniam and Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports AHMU Aruna Bandara complete the EC.

The EC is tasked with managing all matters related to the election of office bearers and committee members, adhering to the Sports Law, Sports Regulations and the SLR Constitution, as outlined by Director General of Sports Shemal Fernando, who convened the SGM in his role as Competent Authority for SLR.

The SGM was also a pivotal step in resolving governance issues within the suspended SLR. It follows a consensus reached between disputing parties at the Court of Appeal on December 6.
