Kandy SC showed what a formidable side they could be in the new inter club rugby season as they crippled and demolished Army SC by a whopping 70 points to 5 in their League match at Nittawela yesterday.
Overall the match was terribly one-sided as the home team ran the ball at every given opportunity to score as many as nine tries, eight of which were converted by the ever-reliable Tharinda Ratwatte who also knocked over three penalties in an unstoppable exhibition of goal-kicking.
Army never played to a set-plan and did not know how to use the scraps of possession that came their way and could not even win their own lineout put-ins.
Kandy SC taking a 39-5 half time lead needed just seven minutes into the match to settle down to play to a plan to go past the 50-point margin for the second week running after they did the same against newcomers Sri Lions in the opening match.
Ratwatte put Kandy SC’s first points on the board with a penalty making the scores 5-3 in the seventh minute of play after Army scored a try to take a five point lead.
Then came the try-scoring spree by the home team with robust forward Dayan Wickremarachie crossing the line followed by centre Dhanushka Ranjan touching down twice in his comeback season.
Scrum half Heshan Jansen and winger Kavindu Perera joined the try-scoring in the first half and what followed in the second half was Kandy crossing the line for more tries in the lop-sided match.
