Embracing yourself

Body positivity is a movement that promotes acceptance and appreciation of all body types, regardless of size, shape or appearance.

It encourages us to embrace our bodies as they are and reject societal pressures to conform to a narrow standard of beauty. The goal is to foster self-love, confidence and mental well-being, while challenging harmful stereotypes and promoting inclusivity.

Body positivity advocates for the idea that everyone, regardless of their appearance, deserves respect, dignity and the right to feel comfortable in their own skin.

At first, embracing body positivity can feel challenging because we are often conditioned by societal standards to view ourselves through a lens of perfection or idealised beauty. But when you allow yourself to accept and love your body — flaws and all — it’s incredibly freeing. It removes the constant pressure to fit into a specific mold and in doing so it opens up space for self-compassion, acceptance and a deeper sense of inner peace. This journey of self-acceptance is unique for everyone, but over time, it can lead to a healthier relationship with yourself, regardless of how your body changes.

A body positivity supportive wardrobe is all about creating a collection of clothes that help you feel comfortable, confident and empowered, regardless of your size, shape, or body type. Building a body-positive wardrobe is about creating a space where you feel free to be yourself—no judgment, no limitations.

It’s not about following trends or trying to fit into a certain mould, but rather about choosing items that make you feel good in your own skin by choosing clothes that bring you joy, comfort and strength and don’t be afraid to embrace your body exactly as it is.

Here are my tips

* Wear clothes that fit, not ‘Fit in’

Fit is Key: Clothing should fit your current body, not the body you ‘wish’ to have.

Avoid squeezing into clothes that are too tight or too loose. Look for garments that offer comfort and flexibility. Avoid ‘Body-Conforming’ styles. Go for styles that allow movement and room for comfort.

* Choose clothes that reflect your personality

Express yourself: Choose colours, textures and prints that feel authentic to who you are. Your wardrobe is an extension of yourself—wear pieces that make you feel happy, confident and true to your individuality. Don’t be afraid to play with bold prints or vibrant colours if that’s what excites you! The key is to feel empowered in whatever you choose.

* Invest in well-fitting basics

Comfortable undergarments: Start with comfortable, well-fitting brassieres and underwear. The right fit can significantly impact how your clothes fit and how confident you feel.

* Celebrate your favourite features

Highlight what you love: If you love your legs, opt for skirts, dresses, or pants that highlight them. If you’re proud of your arms, try sleeveless or off-the-shoulder tops. Your wardrobe should be about accentuating the parts of your body you feel most confident about. Embrace silhouettes (A-line dresses, high-waisted pants and wrap tops) that flatter your shape, not the ones that society says you ‘should’ wear.

* Comfortable shoes

Footwear matters: Choose shoes that are supportive and comfortable for everyday wear. Whether its sneakers, flats, sandals or heels, prioritise comfort and confidence over forcing your feet into something that causes pain. Having options from casual to dressier footwear ensures you never have to sacrifice comfort for style.

* Try new styles and experiments

Step outside your comfort zone: Sometimes body positivity is about trying new things that you wouldn’t have considered before. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles, cuts, or trends. Fashion is a fun way to express yourself! Don’t limit yourself to traditional ‘rules’ of what’s appropriate for certain body types. Play around with combining different patterns, textures and pieces that make you feel happy and confident.

* Confidence is key

Wear confidence: The most supportive aspect of any wardrobe is confidence. When you wear clothing that makes you feel good, your confidence will naturally shine through. Own your look, and remember that confidence is the ultimate accessory.
