Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, whose driver was caught speeding on the expressway, paid the spot fine despite officers on duty offering to release the vehicle without imposing it, informed sources said.
The driver was nabbed for speeding on the Meerigama-Kurunegala stretch of the Central Expressway. The maximum speed limit on this stretch of the expressway is 100 kmph and the Deputy Minister’s driver had exceeded it.
Upon seeing the Deputy Minister in the vehicle, the Police officers had told the driver to proceed. But Dr. Gunasena, who was in the vehicle at the time, insisted on paying the fine, stating that all citizens must adhere to the country’s laws irrespective of their political or other status.
