Veteran journalist E. Weerapperuma passed away on Thursday, December 26, following a brief illness. He was 79.
Weerapperuma, who had a distinguished career spanning several decades, served as the Associate Editor of the Daily News and Deputy Editor of the Sunday Observer. In his later years, he was closely associated with the Catholic weekly The Messenger. Colleagues remember Weerapperuma for his unwavering punctuality and exceptional administrative skills. He had an instinctive news sense and was known for his ability to ensure comprehensive coverage across all facets of the news cycle. Throughout his career, he trained numerous young reporters, passing on his expertise to the next generation of journalists.
Weerapperuma was dedicated to upholding the highest standards or best practices of journalism. He was particularly mindful of the ethical responsibilities of reporting, especially when covering sensitive issues such as violence against women and children.
He often emphasised the importance of respecting the dignity of individuals and avoiding sensationalism or actions that might offend public sensibilities.
Before joining the Lake House group, Weerapperuma had worked as a correspondent for its English language publications. He was also an alumnus of the seminary, a facet of his life that greatly influenced his approach to journalism and ethics.
His funeral took take place yesterday at the St Joseph’s Church Cemetery in Peralanda. – Chamikara Weerasinghe
