Every January, Tamil communities across the world come alive with the colourful and joyous celebration of Thai Pongal, a festival that marks the harvest season. For children, it is a time of delicious food, fun traditions and meaningful lessons about gratitude, hard work and the bond between humans and nature.

But have you ever wondered why we celebrate Thai Pongal? This festival is a way of saying “thank you” to the Sun, the Earth, and the cattle that help us grow food. It’s a reminder that nature is our greatest provider and we must take care of it.

Thai Pongal is celebrated over four days and each day teaches us something special.

Bhogi: On the first day, families clean their homes and get rid of old, unwanted things. It’s like saying goodbye to the past and making space for fresh, new beginnings. You’ll see houses beautifully decorated with colourful kolams, which are intricate patterns made with rice flour.

Thai Pongal Day: This is the main day of the festival. Families wake up early to cook a dish called Pongal rice in clay pots. It’s made with fresh rice, milk and jaggery. When the dish boils over, everyone cheers, “Pongalo Pongal” It’s a happy moment that symbolises prosperity and blessings overflowing.

Mattu Pongal: This day is to honour the animals that help farmers, such as cows and bulls. They are bathed, decorated with garlands and given special treats. It’s a sweet way of showing love and respect to these hardworking animals.

Kaanum Pongal: The last day is all about family and friends. People visit each other, share meals and spend time together. It’s a reminder of how important it is to stay connected with the people we love.

Thai Pongal is more than just a festival. It’s a time to learn about teamwork, kindness, and the importance of being grateful. The Sun shines on everyone equally and Pongal teaches us to share our blessings, just like the Earth shares its bounty with us.

So, this Pongal, while you enjoy the sweets and games, take a moment to thank the world around you. Think about how you can help keep it clean and healthy. Maybe plant a tree, or simply make sure not to waste food.

Wishing you a wonderful Thai Pongal filled with love, laughter and plenty of Pongal. May your days always be as bright as the sun and as sweet as jaggery.
