In 2024, the Air Force proved it is not only committed to protecting the nation’s air space and boundaries but also pushing for the welfare of sports in Sri Lanka.

Through various successful events and exceptional athlete development, the Air Force has become a leading force in sports. Their efforts have not only raised the level of competition but also united the country through the power of sport.

One of the standout events of the year was the Sri Lanka Sports Fiesta 2024, held in Colombo from August 16 to 18. This massive event brought together over 3,000 athletes competing in sports like cricket, rugby, football, volleyball, netball and basketball.

A highlight of the event was the Air Force Commander’s Cup rugby tournament, where the best teams from Sri Lanka’s top divisions went head-to-head. The competition showcased their ability to organize world-class events, setting a new standard for sporting excellence in the country.

Rugby, in particular, has always been close to the heart of Air Force. The Commander’s Cup tournament has grown into one of the most important events for Sri Lanka’s rugby players. It has given them a stage to show off their skills and compete at the highest level.

In addition, the Air Force Football League Championship 2024 showed their dedication to promoting the world’s most popular sport. The event provided talented young footballers the chance to make a name for them and further the sport’s presence in Sri Lanka.

Air Force’s contributions to other sports have been equally impressive. Events like the Commander’s Cup golf tournament and the Eagles’ Quadrangle Cup golf tournament, held in the picturesque location of China Bay in Trincomalee have raised the profile of golf in Sri Lanka.

Another significant event was the ‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya,’ a five-day cycling marathon that tested athletes’ endurance.

The event, which stretched from Colombo to Jaffna, was not just a race but also a symbol of national unity with the power of sport building solidarity.

Air Marshal Udeni Rajapakse was in the driving seat leading from the front like the Serviceman and Flier he is committed to his task and duty and whose vision and dedication have driven their success in sports.

With the help of Group Captain Eranda Geeganage, their sporting programs continue to grow, inspiring athletes across the country and through these efforts, they have established its place as a driving force in Sri Lanka’s sports field.
