Rebutting a social media backlash over the opening of the country’s first 100 percent female-staffed hotel in Kandalama as a move that discriminates and undermines the role of senior males, hoteliers commended the bold initiative which sets a precedent for other hotels to increase its female workforce.
Tourist Hotels Association President, M. Shanthikumar said the current seven percent or less than that female workforce in the tourism industry should be increased as it would open the doors for more women to enter the lucrative business.
“We appreciate the courageous move by the Chairman of ‘Amba Yaalu’ to launch an all-female hotel which encourages other hotels to follow suit and also incentivises females to enter the industry,” Shanthikumar said.
The tourism industry marked a major milestone last week with the opening of the country’s and South Asia’s first all-female hotel in Kandalama.
Soft Logic Holdings PLC Chairman, Ashok Pathirage said the industry must go for new things and those initiating such novel things should be encouraged. There is no point in criticising a new initiative without knowing what it is all about.

Inspired by the novel ‘Amba Yaluwo’ (Mango Friends) and the golden era of Sri Lankan cinema, the property is Sri Lanka’s first hotel fully managed and staffed by women.
Built under the auspices of the “Thema Collection”, the resort commenced operations following a ceremony attended by Embassy officials and well-known figures in the tourism industry. Adding significance to the event was the religious observance by two female bhikkhunis to invoke blessing on the staff.
Chairman of the hotel, Chandra Wickramasinghe who is also the visionary behind the initiative said females have played a key role in the country’s political leadership and in many important spheres of the corporate arena and that is ample proof that women could make a salient contribution to any sector of the economy.
The hotel manager Madhuwanthi Adhikari said it’s a privilege to be a part of the hotel led by females who have proved their worth with unmatched skills.
