Children of Samurdhi and Aswesuma beneficiary families who have skills in technological fields will be selected under the Government’s program from this year to be sent abroad for well-paid jobs.
Kurunegala District Senior Divisional Secretary R.M.Jayaratne told a meeting of the National Youth Services Council (NYSC) members of the Kurunegala District yesterday that this could address the issue of poverty among low-income families in Sri Lanka. They would be sent to developed countries such as Japan for jobs and opportunities will be created for them to overcome their economic hardships.”
He said nearly 3.5 million Sri Lankans are now employed in foreign countries and they remit US$ 6,500 million per year.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath has made arrangements to offer foreign jobs to children who come from low-income families.
According to the latest statistics of the Foreign Employment Ministry, Sri Lanka sent nearly 311,000 Sri Lankans for foreign jobs in 2024 and 340,000 skilled workers will be sent in 2025 for lucrative overseas jobs.
