In an ambitious exploration of contemporary themes, Sangeeth Madurawala poses a thought-provoking question: “How vibrantly can an artist portray the contemporary dystopian dream this island has been dreaming for years along with all its socio-cultural and political traumas?” His collection, Fractured (Digital Reckoning), seeks to answer this query through a vivid, kaleidoscopic lens.

Madurawala’s work serves as a visual exploration of the paradoxes that define our world, where beauty coexists with decay, trauma intertwines with resilience, and harmony clashes with chaos. The exhibition presents four interconnected collections that delve deep into the unsettling realities often hidden beneath the surface of everyday life.

He elaborates, “This body of work unfolds as a single, non-dialectic narrative that reimagines Sri Lanka’s socio-political history through a broad spectrum of themes.” These themes include post-war trauma, racial conflicts, and the silent suffering of those lost in political strife, as well as the powerful yet often suppressed identities of women within the ‘masculine conflicts’ prevalent in South Asian culture.

Throughout the exhibition, each artwork captures the fragments of society’s unspoken truths. Sangeeth describes these as “the haunting elegance of a decayed reality, the scars of personal and collective wounds,” where the tension of colliding and merging cultures is palpable. The moments of fracture depicted in his pieces reveal a mesmerizing and unsettling duality, showcasing the delicate balance between creation and destruction.

Crafted entirely in digital media, Madurawala’s works incorporate collage, photo manipulation, and expressive digital brushstrokes, constructing layered narratives that invite viewers to engage deeply with the content. He notes, “Fractured (Digital Reckoning) is not just an exhibition; it is an invitation to witness the duality of existence — to see the danger within beauty and the beauty within chaos.”

As Fractured prepares to open its doors, audiences can look forward to an introspective journey through the complexities of identity and the socio-political fabric of Sri Lanka, offering a unique perspective on the myriad narratives that define the contemporary experience.
