The brain is an amazing organ that controls almost everything we do. It’s like the boss of our body. So let’s break it down in an easy way for us to understand.

What is the brain?

The brain is part of your central nervous system and is located inside your head, protected by your skull. It’s made up of billions of tiny cells called neurons that send messages to each other and helps control how you move, feel, think and even breathe.

Different parts of the brain

The brain has different parts, each with its own special job. Let’s look at some of them:

• Cerebrum: This is the biggest part of your brain. It helps you think, learn, solve problems, and even move your muscles.

It’s divided into two halves: the left side controls the right side of your body, and the right side controls the left part.

• Cerebellum: This part is located at the back of your head. It helps with balance and coordination. So when you run, jump, or even ride a bike, your cerebellum is helping you stay steady.

• Brainstem: The brainstem controls things that happen automatically, like breathing, heart rate, and digestion. It connects your brain to your spinal cord.

How does the brain work?

Your brain is always working, even when you’re sleeping! It gets information from your senses (like what you see, hear, or feel) and sends messages to your body to tell it what to do. For example, if you touch something hot, your brain tells your hand to pull it away quickly.

Neurons – The brain’s superheroes

Neurons are like tiny messengers in your brain. They talk to each other by sending electrical signals.

These signals help you remember things, control your movements and understand the world around you.

How do we keep our brain healthy?

Just like how we take care of our bodies, we need to take special care of our brain. Here are some tips:

Eat healthy: Foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and fish help your brain stay strong.

Sleep well: Getting enough sleep is super important because your brain needs rest to function well.

Exercise: Moving your body helps the blood flow to your brain, making it work better.

Practise mind games: Puzzles, reading and learning new things can help your brain stay sharp.

Fun Fact

Did you know the brain is sometimes called the “control centre” of your body because it’s in charge of everything? It even helps you remember things like your favourite colour, your best friend’s name, or where you left your shoes.
