The Local Government Elections (Special Provisions) Bill will be presented to Parliament tomorrow (17) at 2.00 pm following President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s Budget speech.
Parliament’s Director of Communications and Legislature Services, Jayalath Perera told the Sunday Observer that House sittings will be temporarily suspended in accordance with protocol after the President’s speech, and recommence for the Bill to be presented.
The Bill will be debated till 7.00 pm after which divisions will be taken. According to the Supreme Court, the Bill needs to be passed by a 2/3rds majority. Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Chandana Abeyratne said that the Bill is expected to be passed in Parliament and the report will be submitted to the Election Commission under the signature of the Speaker.
He said that the Election Commission will study the report and assign a suitable date for the polls.
