The World Press photo exhibition recently took place, showcasing award-winning photojournalism from around the globe.
Celebrating its 70th anniversary, the exhibition featured the winning images from the 2024 World Press Photo Contest, which premiered in Amsterdam earlier in April.
Organised by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Press Institute, the exhibition presented a collection of powerful photographs that highlighted critical social and environmental issues, human experiences, and significant global events.
The exhibition was open to the public free of charge, allowing audiences to immerse themselves in compelling visual narratives. Throughout the event, attendees had the chance to participate in engaging sessions, including a talk by Anomaa Rajakaruna titled ‘If You Are On Time, You Are Late’ and a philosophical exploration of photography by Dr. Darshana
Ashoka Kumara, named ‘Roland Barthes and the Philosophy of Photography: Unveiling Meaning Through the Lens’. A panel discussion moderated by Udari Gamage featured Deshan Karunarathne and Ravindra Priyantha Lal who examined Sri Lanka’s history, culture, and heritage through photography. The exhibition also included a Photo Walk conducted by Streets of Colombo, further enriching the experience for visitors.
