On February 9, The Barnhouse Panadura made history by hosting WAYO – Strings of Souls, Sri Lanka’s first-ever carbon-neutral music festival.

A groundbreaking collaboration between The Barnhouse, WAYO, Green Pictures, and Control Union, this event redefined what a festival could be — proving that sustainability and artistic excellence can coexist.

From the very beginning, WAYO – Strings of Souls was more than a music festival; it was a movement. With 300 guitarists from diverse backgrounds coming together under WAYO’s creative vision, the event became an awe-inspiring symphony of people and nature. The energy on stage reflected the festival’s core belief that music is not just about sound — it is a shared experience that connects people and transcends generations.

Beyond the music, the festival set a new benchmark for sustainability in Sri Lanka’s entertainment industry. The Barnhouse, known for its eco-conscious hospitality, spearheaded key sustainability initiatives designed to minimize environmental impact.

Waste management strategies eliminated single-use plastics in favor of biodegradable alternatives, while energy-efficient lighting and optimized sound systems reduced overall electricity consumption. Eco-friendly shuttles and carpooling incentives further helped cut down the festival’s carbon footprint. A plant-based, locally sourced menu reinforced the event’s commitment to sustainable food practices.

As part of its commitment to knowledge transfer and inspiring future generations, WAYO – Strings of Souls featured exclusive guitar workshops led by industry professionals, providing musicians with hands-on learning opportunities while reinforcing the festival’s message of collaboration and sustainability.

Green Pictures’ powerful documentary, ‘Footprint’, was also screened at the event, shedding light on the urgency of environmental conservation through compelling storytelling.

With the meticulous oversight of Control Union, the festival’s carbon emissions were tracked, offset, and neutralised, ensuring compliance with international sustainability standards. The University of Colombo, serving as the festival’s knowledge partner, played a crucial role in assessing the environmental impact of the event. In a significant development, the university will soon publish a research paper on this initiative, providing valuable insights into the success of sustainable event planning and setting a benchmark for future eco-conscious festivals in Sri Lanka.

WAYO – Strings of Souls has now set a precedent for Sri Lanka’s entertainment industry, proving that large-scale events can be both artistically groundbreaking and environmentally responsible. The Barnhouse’s vision extends beyond this festival — it marks the beginning of a broader movement towards sustainable event planning in the country.

By seamlessly blending music, nature, and sustainability, WAYO – Strings of Souls was more than just a festival; it was a glimpse into the future —one where creativity and environmental responsibility go hand in hand, inspiring a new era of conscious entertainment.
