McLarens Maritime Academy holds Convocation ceremony

Students who completed the Navigation Officer Cadet Training Program, Phase I, and Pre-Sea Training Course - Deck Rating with MMA officials and guests.

McLarens Maritime Academy (MMA) hosted its Convocation 2024 at the BMICH recently.

The event marked the successful completion of the Navigation Officer Cadet Training Program, Phase I, Batch 1 and Pre-Sea Training Course Deck Rating Batch 5, with graduates now ready to embark on their careers in the global maritime industry, a spokesman for the Academy said.

For the first time in the academy’s history, four women deck rating trainees successfully completed the program, marking a milestone in MMA’s commitment to fost diversity in the maritime sector. These pioneering graduates are now prepared to navigate careers in the industry, he added.

Harbour Master of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Captain Nirmal Silva was the chief guest. Director General of Merchant Shipping Secretary, Asanka Deshapriya, Group Managing Director of McLarens Group, Shehara De Silva and representing Monaco Marine (Pvt) Ltd Captain Roshan Perera several industry leaders, including McLarens Group CEO, Oshan Fernando, Dr. Ravi Edirisinghe, Group CCO, Group Directors Shanil Perera, Chandana Wijesundara, Admiral Jayantha Perera, Ashan Welagedara, Captain Athula Hewawitharana, Captain Keith Jayasuriya, Navin Perera, Thushara Perera, Chandima Hulangamuwa representatives from the National Union of Seafarers Sri Lanka were also present. The ceremony featured a student parade, the awarding of certificates and scholarships and recognition of outstanding performers. Parents, faculty members and representatives from McLarens Group witnessed this milestone moment as graduates were inducted into the maritime profession. Dr. Ravi Edirisinghe commended McLarens Maritime Academy for its dedication to producing seafarers who meet international standards and contribute to the industry’s growth.

Principal and General Manager of McLarens Maritime Academy, Yasas Telwatta outlined the academy’s commitment to producing skilled maritime professionals equipped with the highest standards of training and education. He emphasised the rigorous training programs, the quality of education provided at MMA and the bright future awaiting graduates in the global shipping industry.

He acknowledged the hard work, discipline and determination of the students, ensuring they are well-prepared to take on their roles in the maritime sector.

MMA graduates have an excellent track record of securing placements in renowned shipping companies worldwide and this batch is expected to follow the same path. The academy continues to provide high- quality training programs that align with global industry standards, ensuring a strong career foundation for aspiring seafarers.
