A rare celestial phenomenon of aligning seven planets of the solar system in a row, was visible for Sri Lankans after sunset from February 25 to 28. People witnessed Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn without any optical assistance while the other two – Neptune and Uranus – with the help of a telescope. Here the Director of the Astronomy and Space Sciences Unit at the University of Colombo’s Department of Physics, Prof. Chandana Jayaratne and other astronomy enthusiasts observing the planetary alignment, the kind of which will not occur again until 2040, at a camp held in Colombo.
