A decision has been made to set up seven Sectoral Oversight Committees to enhance the functionality of the Tenth Parliament. This resolution was reached during a meeting of the Committee on Parliamentary Business, chaired by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne on Thursday.

The Secretary-General of Parliament, Kushani Rohanadeera said the new committees will cover the scope of all ministries, ensuring that parliamentary oversight is comprehensive and effective.

Three of the Committee Chairmanships will be allocated to the Opposition, while the remaining four will be led by members of the Government. The setting up of these Committees follows the recommendations of a dedicated Committee tasked with reviewing the functionality of previous oversight bodies to ensure that the Committees operate efficiently and contribute to better governance and accountability within the legislative process.

The Committee on Parliamentary Business also approved the formation of a Parliamentary Caucus for Persons with Disabilities at the request by Members of Parliament Sugath Wasantha de Silva and Dr. Pathmanathan Sathyalingam.
