Families of the forcibly disappeared in the Northern Province held a protest at the Vadduvakal Bridge in Mullaitivu yesterday, marking eight years (2,923 days) of their continuous struggle for truth and justice. The demonstration was held at the location where their family members, which included LTTE militants, were last seen after being handed over to the Sri Lanka Army during the final stages of the war in 2009. The families, comprising parents and relatives of the disappeared, marched across the bridge yesterday in a symbolic act, reiterating their demand for accountability and answers.
In a statement issued the families declared, “Today marks eight years (2,923 days) since our ongoing struggle in the Mullaitivu district, demanding truth and justice for our forcibly disappeared loved ones. As mothers, fathers, and families, we continue this long and courageous fight, seeking accountability for the enforced disappearances of our dearest ones.”
For years, families of the disappeared have maintained roadside protests, refusing to accept compensation and rejecting the Office of Missing Persons (OMP), which they said had failed to provide meaningful answers. Instead, they continue to call for an independent international inquiry into the fate of their loved ones.
