The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) is marking World Consumer Rights Day by highlighting the theme “A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles,” emphasising the importance of adopting eco-friendly habits and ensuring that sustainable choices are accessible to all consumers.
In a statement, Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority, Manjula Pinnalanda, pointed out that global consumer willingness to embrace sustainability is strong, with 94% of consumers expressing interest in adopting more sustainable lifestyles. However, the Chairman noted that over 80% of consumers face challenges accessing sustainable products and services, a fact which highlights the need for greater infrastructure and affordable options.
In line with this year’s theme, the CAA will be rolling out various awareness programs to educate the public about their rights as consumers. From March 17 to 19, the CAA will provide information at District Secretariats through partnerships with the Ministry of Health, the Sustainable Energy Authority, and the Central Environmental Authority. A key focus will be the safety of food under the Clean Sri Lanka program.
“These initiatives are designed to address critical issues such as food safety, reducing plastic usage, supporting ethical businesses, and promoting sustainable consumption,” said Pinnalanda. “We will also emphasize the importance of conserving resources like electricity and water, and we encourage consumers to turn to sustainable products wherever possible.”
The Chairman further urged citizens to become more active in understanding their consumer rights and to participate in such programs, which aim to cultivate a responsible business and consumer culture. “By working together, we can ensure that we are protecting our environment for future generations, while also fostering a more sustainable economy.”
