The birth of Sakyamuni Siddartha Gauthama led to the emergence of the Dhamma which he offered world in the greater interest of the humanity. After his Enlightenment as the Gautama Buddha, he accorded the doctrine, the foremost place which caused to protect and foster his teachings that later spread peacefully across the globe.

Sri Sambodhi Vihara, Colombo 7, noted for its noble service, is one such place where the Dhamma is spread across the world. Sri Lankan Buddhists in Australia do benefit a lot from the Buddhist Channel. Ven. Panadure Ariyadhamma Thera and Ven. Piyadassi Thera were the previous incumbents of this sacred place.

Nestled in a tranquil location, this sacred venue providing all amenities is an ideal Punyabhumi that has become one of the most sought-after popular Buddhist centres in the capital city with the brilliant blend of all features.“Peace of Mind to All” is the motto of this model Buddhist Centre. The solidly constructed five storied temple building helps anyone to identify the majestic sight of the temple from afar.

Today, this has become a perfect Dhamma centre reflecting the proud culture and tradition inspired by the Buddhist ideals reformed by the most Ven. Daranagama Kusaladhamma Thera. The painted Buddhist statues resembling living marvels are venerated by all. The profound serenity of the spiritual site calms one’s mind to reflect on eternity.

The effect is enhanced by the exposition of the most sacred Buddhist relics in the topmost floor. Several floors are utilised for the dissemination of Dhamma.

Revolutionary change

Ven. Kusaladhamma Thera set in motion this great institution more than two decades ago. His prime aim and concern were to see it shine in the Buddhist world. Virtue and morality have gained foothold amid the spiritual atmosphere. The light of wisdom has spread everywhere. Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha glitter all the time. The wisdom that the Buddha gained has passed on to every part of the island and across the globe. This revolutionary change in the religious sphere is a notable factor that should be attributed to him. This is a remarkable achievement and a marvellous gift to the Buddhist world.

This has a profound influence on the evolution of Dhamma, arousing the interest of non-Buddhists as well. In the study and practice of Dhamma, this temple remains as his masterpiece reflecting the religious service to humanity.

The Thera contributed a great deal towards Buddhist revival through the Buddhist Channel he founded. Numerous services performed, owe their origins to the Ven. Thera. He opened a new chapter in all its activities. The program of the day includes poojas performed in the morning and evening, the traditional way, with due reverence paid to the Triple Gem. The Sath-Budhu Pooja and Kiriahara pooja, the offering of milk-rice are performed early morning. Another daily ritual, the noon alms comprising rice and 32 curries is offered with great care and devotion. The evening pooja comprising medicinal herbs of 108 varieties follows. The Sri Sarwagna Dathu pooja is another merit bestowing act.

The torch lit by Ven. Kusaladhamma Thera is now carried forward by his pupil, the chief disciple, Ven. Boralande Vajiragnana Thera, thus preserving the Buddhist tradition giving its due place to the Triple Gem. He deserves the honour of preserving to date the endless service to the spiritual progress along with the other learned resident bhikkhus. He has breathed a new spirit into the activities of the sacred venue for the benefit of the future generations.

The Buddhist Channel brings into life a variety of religious activities with the Buddhist teachings being accorded the foremost place. Budhumaga, Sathdharma Sagaraya, Sasarin Nivanata, Supasan Jeewithaya, Meheni Waruna, Sasara Danawuwa, Vibajjavada are a few of the items telecast. The meditation program undertaken by reputed bhikkhus is of great value. Among other programs are Tribodhi, Gee Samadhi, where the fragrance of Dhamma with a soothing tone is generated for stressful minds. The day commences with the worshipping of parents, introduced by the most Ven. Panadure Ariyadhamma Thera.

“Sabba Danan Dhamma Dhanan Jinathi” – the gift of the Dhamma excels all other gifts. The Dhamma sermons are exactly what he wished for the propagation of Dhamma. The erudite, scholarly bhikkhus of Sri Lanka display their amazing oratory in delivering the sermons. The noble teachings are explained lucidly to the laity. Bhikkhus – kind, selfless, pious personalities who have given up the comforts of the lay life – are always dedicated to propagating the noble teachings. They are Kalyana Mittas, whom one could depend on by listening to the Dhamma. It is always a pure delight to listen to them. Bana preaching occupies the topmost place. Buddhist sermons are delivered throughout the day. This is reflected in the day’s program of sermons. These sermons are of special benefit to those who are in the evening of their lives. This is something that has never happened in the past.

A landmark in highlighting the Dhamma

The daily live sutra deshana is a significant event for Buddhists – a landmark in highlighting the Dhamma scripture. Sri Lankans have made many parts of the world their home today. Wherever they are domiciled, they feel at home with the bliss of these Dhamma sermons. It is said that many pass their last breath while listening to Dhamma and Parithrana desana. Establishing a network of branches in the principal towns of the country is another great measure to be admired by the Buddhists in entirety.

Ven. Kusaladhamma Thera did succeed in this noble task which continues to date, performing a magnanimous service. The fact that Buddhist sermons are accorded a very high position, undoubtedly plays a vital role in the life of the Buddhist. He aided the rural temples by helping the needy. The victims of various calamities were helped by carrying lorry-loads of relief items. Buddhist statues, wheelchairs and other essential items were donated on various occasions.

Ven. Kusaladhamma Thera’s accomplishments have won him great honour in religious and social spheres. He was interested in emphasizing the value of the national Buddhist heritage. He often reminisced the glorious past of the island regarding the service of the national heroes such as Anagarika Dharmapala and the Kings, Pandukabhaya, Dutugemunu, Dhatusena and Parakramabahu, visiting their honoured stupas and performing poojas.

“Maha Sinhale Rajawanshaya”, “BauddhaIthihasaya” and “Sahithya Waruna” which revealed the ancient history of the island is a successful noble mission, winning acclaim from every quarter. The restoration of “Deegavaapi Chethiya” where this commemoration ceremony is held is the most outstanding event in the history of the Sambodhi Vihara. “Paaramidam” donating purified water to the needy in the North Central Province where kidney disease is prevalent was started by Ven. Kusaladhamma Thera. it is continued to date by the present incumbent Ven. Boralande Vajiragnana Thera and Director General, Prof. Garuthara and the staff.

The Sambodhi Magazine published by the temple is a great blessing for all those who seek knowledge in the religious sphere. The administrative and working staff give much support and strength to all the activities of the temple. They are totally committed to the task, devoting their time and energy. Working as a team is the key to their success.

Compering of events in the entire structure is of a very high standard. It gives me great pleasure to offer my grateful appreciation for the service rendered and for their responsibilities and mature leadership. I do hope that this exemplary service will continue for many more years.

May Ven. Kusaladhamma Thera attain the Supreme Bliss of Nibbana.
