Havelock Sports Club is certain to maintain their position in second spot in the League points table having earned a somewhat comeback win over Air Force by 40 points to 22 in a league game played at Havelock Park.
Although Airmen scored first through a try by Manuka Perera, Havelocks came back to score twice and take the lead 12-7. Havelocks scored through Rifan Mohamad followed by another try by Udara Lakshan.
The game thereafter swung like a pendulum with Airmen scoring twice through Pramod Padmashanka and another by hooker Chamika Kaushan to lead 17-12.
But with Havelock’s star winger Jayathu Rajaratne in top form once again scored a try when it was urgently needed. Maduwantha converted this try and Havelocks went into the lead again at half time 19-17.
Air Force once again scored first in the second half with Sandun Mandiv scoring an unconverted try in the 50th minute to take the lead again 22-19.
But Havelocks were not to feel the discomfort of being behind and after a rolling maul led by Azmir Fajudeen, Sandesh Jayawickrema went over the line. With the conversion by the reliable place kicker Samuel Maduwantha, Havelocks took the lead again on 26-22.
From that point onwards Havelocks looked like the champion team and their leading try scorer Rajaratne scored his second try of the match.
With the conversion by Maduwantha they went ahead 33-22 not leaving any room for the Airmen to come back and take the lead.
Havelock SC scored again in the final minute through a try by Charana Sendanayake and with the conversion took a commanding 40-22 points lead until full time.
This victory gave Havelocks their place in second spot in the points table in the Cup segment. This has pushed CR & FC into third spot with 42 points.
