- EDR app to report election law violations
- Boost for holding free and fair polls
The Election Commission yesterday launched a mobile application designed to streamline the handling of election-related complaints and ensure free and fair polls.
The new Election Dispute Resolution (EDR) app – developed by the Commission’s IT Department – enables the public, election monitors and law enforcement agencies to directly report election violations and irregularities in real time.
Election Commission Chairman R. M. A. L. Ratnayake described the app as a significant step forward in strengthening electoral transparency and accountability.
“This application enables people to lodge complaints directly with the authorities, including the Commission and the police,” he said, adding that the tool would make it easier for all stakeholders to uphold electoral law.
Ratnayake acknowledged the rapid development of the app and said that while there may be minor teething issues, the initiative marks a new era in election administration. “This app represents the beginning of a new working partnership between the Commission and the police in managing election-related complaints,” he said.
The EDR app includes a video recording feature, allowing users to capture footage of any election violation and send it to the Commission. These complaints will then be routed to the relevant police division for action.
Additional Election Commissioner Chinthaka Kularatne said that complaints received via the app would be seamlessly forwarded to the police through the software. “This system ensures swift and transparent processing of election incidents,” he said.
Senior DIG Dr. Dinesh Karunanayake and Election Commission Chairman Saman Sri Ratnayake also addressed the launch event, hailing the app as a timely innovation ahead of the upcoming Local Government elections.
