As Ladies’ College (LC) celebrates a milestone year – it is nothing but apt to present yet another stellar water ballet during its 125th year Legacy Celebrations.
‘Everland’ is a water ballet based on the much loved story of Peter Pan with a special LC twist. We are also proud that for the first time, two gifted young alumni have directed, produced and choreographed this production which undoubtedly will be a treat for our audience.
Ladies’ College was the first school in Sri Lanka to introduce artistic swimming (previously synchronised swimming) over fifty years ago.
In December 1973 for the first time in Sri Lanka a scintillating display of artistic swimming was presented at the Royal College Swimming Pool by the advanced swimming squad of Ladies’ College. Since then the school has presented many water ballets from a spectacular fantasy water ballet “Little Sea Maid” by Hans Anderson performed in 1975 with a display of unusual choreography, free rhythm, acrobatic skills and a remarkable flame drill display to the splendid performances of “The Little Mermaid” in 1992 (when the school was privileged to be the first girls school to have its own swimming pool), “Thumbalina” in 1997, “All that Jazz” in 2008 and “Dancing through the decades” in 2013. Additionally, the school’s artistic swimmers presented a water ballet in 1997 at the Pentathlon Championships and participated in a water ballet organised by NAASU in 1998 titled ‘Aqua Splendour’.
The Ladies’ College artistic swimmers have gone on from strength to strength, excelling not only in the national artistic swimming arena but on several occasions representing Sri Lanka in this sport and winning many accolades for the country.
