Leading investigative journalist and Deputy Editor of the Sunday Times, Namini Wijedasa, has been recognised with the U. S. Secretary of State’s 2025 International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award for her exceptional contributions to journalism and her relentless pursuit of transparency in Sri Lanka. The announcement on the U. S. State Department’s website highlighted Wijedasa’s commitment to accountability and transparency. “Through her work, Ms. Wijedasa has consistently championed accountability, emphasising that meaningful change can only be achieved when the people demand transparency from those in power, urging them to address the nation’s long-standing challenges.”
Despite operating in an environment where restrictive laws have had a chilling effect on freedom of expression, Wijedasa remains undeterred in her mission. Her work not only exposes corruption but also fosters dialogue on economic development and good governance, inspiring a new generation of investigative journalists to follow in her footsteps.
