Scorching temperatures are set to intensify across Sri Lanka’s Northern, North-Central, North-Western, and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Colombo, and Gampaha districts, meteorologists said yesterday. This surge in heat is attributed to a combination of seasonal climatic patterns and atmospheric conditions.
The Heat Index has now reached the “Extreme Caution” level, with temperatures ranging between 32°C and 41°C in some regions. Meteorologists said that at this stage, heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, while heat stroke could occur with prolonged exposure and activity. Experts advise the public to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, take regular breaks in shaded areas, and wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-coloured clothing to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. People are also called upon to limit strenuous outdoor activities, especially during the hottest hours of the day, and to keep a close check on vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.
