The Department of Legal Studies under the Faculty of Business at NSBM Green University, hosted the Interschool English Debate Competition, ‘Orator’s Odyssey 25’, on March 7. This event, held under the theme ‘Law for Social Change’, was a key social responsibility initiative of the department and the first of its kind for the year.

As Sri Lanka’s premier degree-awarding institute, NSBM Green University offers two LL.B (Hons) degree programs through its Department of Legal Studies—one approved by the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka, and the other offered in collaboration with University of Plymouth, UK. With a state-of-the-art campus in Homagama, NSBM provides an unparalleled academic experience for aspiring legal professionals.

Empowering future leaders through debate

With the launch of ‘Orator’s Odyssey 25’, NSBM’s Department of Legal Studies has aimed to provide a vibrant platform for young school students to express themselves, engage in critical conversations, and excel in the art of structured argumentation. Recognizing that debate is far more than an intellectual contest; the event focused on nurturing critical thinking, effective communication, problem-solving, and civic engagement—all essential qualities for future leaders. Given that many school students have limited opportunities to develop these skills due to rigid academic schedules, this initiative served as a much-needed space for them to learn and grow.

This district-wide competition, open to schools across Colombo, encouraged students to participate, regardless of their prior knowledge of law. The department assured that legal expertise was not a prerequisite, making the event accessible to all. Schools enthusiastically responded, leading to a thrilling debate that saw students passionately discussing contemporary topics.

A showcase of talent and passion

‘Orator’s Odyssey 25’ featured two dynamic rounds, with parallel debates covering Information Technology and Gender Equality. The participants displayed remarkable confidence, eloquence, and analytical skills, making the event an inspiring experience for all. Teachers, mentors, and law students witnessed firsthand how debating can shape young individuals into articulate and informed citizens.

If you are a student with a passion for law, critical thinking, or public speaking, NSBM Green University is the ideal place to unlock your potential. With world-class LL.B programs and a vibrant academic community, NSBM is dedicated to nurturing the legal and business leaders of the future.
