Godwin Walter Samarajiwa, born on December 14, 1928, at “Samaragiri” in Panadura, lived a life defined by discipline, faith, and simplicity. He was the son of Grace Ethel and Percy Samarajiwa and grew up with five siblings in a close-knit family.

In 1947, he joined the Bank of Ceylon. Well known for being extra methodical, his colleagues hesitated even to take a pen from his table, knowing they had to return it to its exact place. His attention to order extended to his home life, where even my mother would face reprimands for taking his pens.

Beyond his career, he had many passions. As a teenager, he was fascinated by bicycles. Later, he was the proud owner of several motor bikes and took an annual trip to Haputale. Old photographs capture him proudly posing with his motorbike, always dressed smartly.

His love for vehicles extended to cars, and he became well known in Panadura for his blue Morris Minor, decorated with a row of badges on the front bumper and sarcastic stickers inside. As children, my brother and I enjoyed a ride in it to school and on outings. He was extremely protective of his belongings—those who slammed his car door never got a second chance for a lift!

His strong sense of faith guided his life. He believed in faith healing and did not wish to take medicine unless as a last resort. His unwavering belief helped him realize his dreams. At the same time, he was generous and compassionate, never hesitating to help those in need.

An animal lover, he was a longstanding member of the Wildlife Association of Sri Lanka. He had many pets throughout his life, caring for them deeply.

He was also a marksman. He practised target shooting even at a ripe old age and scared off intruders in the backyard when needed.

Simplicity was his guiding principle. He chose a modest life, focusing on building an estate for his heirs. He celebrated the milestone of his 65th wedding anniversary in a quiet and meaningful way at home.

After a fulfilling 96 years, he passed away on January 16, 2025, in the very room where he was born at “Samaragiri.” It was his greatest wish to take his final breath in the home he loved.

May his soul rest in peace.
