Pelwatte Dairy to open Ibbagamuwa milk processing plant next year

Pelwatte Dairy Industries Limited, a trailblazer in Sri Lanka’s dairy sector has invested Rs. 4 million on a milk processing plant in Ibbagamua

Pelwatte Dairy Industries Limited (PDIL), a major player in Sri Lanka’s dairy sector, is opening a new milk processing plant in Ibbagamuwa, Kurunegala which is expected to be ready for commercial operation by 2026 according to a senior official of the company.

The objective of the new facility is boost local milk production and reduce reliance on imports.

“The new milk processing plant at Ibbagamuwa underscores the commitment of PDIL to expand local dairy production and save foreign exchange on imports of milk powder,” PDIL Managing Director Akmal Wikramanayake.

The new plant aims to increase the amount of milk processed locally, reducing the need for milk powder imports and supporting local farmers by providing them with a reliable market for their milk and improving their livelihoods.

PDIL also plans to expand its operations in the North and Eastern provinces which it believes are major markets for dairy products.

‘The facility at Ibbagamuwa will enable us to cater to the North and East population,” Wikamanayake said adding that the new facility emphasises the company’s commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing.

The company is focused on expanding its production network, diversifying its product range, and strengthening its partnerships with local dairy farmers.

“We have lined up a host of new products that will be released to the market soon,” he said.

A 100 percent local dairy brand, PDIL marked the grand finale of its consumer promotion campaign, ‘Pelwatte Kiri Ithirena Miliyanayak’ with a ceremony in Colombo last week to present prizes to the winners.

The campaign which ran for two months invited consumers to send in two empty Pelwatte full cream milk powder 400G packets with their contact details for a chance to win cash prizes.

A winner received a cash prize of Rs. 100,000 each week culminating in the selection of a grand prize winner who took home Rs. 1,000,000.

The eight weekly winners comprised: H.H.D. Gunaawardena -Pitabeddara, A.G. Inoka Nelum Kumari – Kandy, I. Sandhya Malkanthi – Wathura, A. Mallika Gamlaksha – Panadura, Dimani Chathurika – Galle, Deepika Kumuduni – Wadduwa, D.R.C. Wijemanna – Horana and M. Stephen – Makola.

The grand prize was awarded to D.L. Latha from Galle.

“The campaign is not only about giving away prizes-its about celebrating a journey with customers and reaffirming our promise to deliver quailtity and stand by the community,” Wikramanayake said.
